Flowers

Both my grandmothers had a great love of embroidery and as such I've inherited their work on beautiful tablecloths, tray mats and napkins - stitched flowers worked in intricate detail with endless patience. I often wonder if those early memories of seeing colours and shapes grow on white linen influenced me. I've been rediscovering flowers recently and have been greatly enjoying painting the complexities of their shapes and patterns. My grandmothers' names were Roseanna and Elizabeth - shortened to Rose and Lily - apt for the subject matter, and they're never far from my thoughts when I'm working on flowers in my studio.
